i saw this monet online while i was at uni writing an essay on impressionism.
fell in love with it straight away and im not too sure why but it has remained a favourite ever since.
found it in paris when i was there in 2007. it was quite small and you could very easily have missed it. i remember having stared at it a very long time.

i dont think ive ever been big on teddies and soft toys but im sentimental.
when we moved house at the end of 1997 i lost a massive heap.

now living above my wardrobe i have the white bear that mum got when she first moved to aus after marrying dad, the giraffe that granny bought me on her first trip to aus, big bird who my aunties bought me for christmas when they lived here for a few years, the racoon who's tail no longer squeaks, the pink bear who used to play music, the little orange tiger who used to be furry until horns gave him a haircut, the yellow duck that replaced the one my aunty gave me. i lost it and cried on the bus ride home from school. i think that was in high school. ew.

i have a little lion that lives in my backyard.
he's a bit needy and is always making sure that your hand is on his back. he hates birds on his turf and squirrels are his worst enemy. his best friend is mister octopus although they sometimes have their disagreements. you can tell cause mister octopus will have lost a leg.

so to continue my streak of epic fails no.4 is late. i propose that the deadline should be changed to before sunrise the next morning. really. who actually thinks of that time between midnight and whenever the sun wakes up as the next day. its all the same night.

i get sentimental over crap pretty easily and so my room is slowly starting to resemble that of a 90yr old creepy cat lady. this is my pencil case from 1998. we were in yr8. it remembers who my friends were in love with. apparently i was in love with han jae-seok and god. i think they fought it out to be the sole winner of my affections but i never really found out who won. id ask my 1999 pencil case but i think i moved on to a metal snoopy tin of sorts and that one was useless. i tried feeding it my notes for my italian exams but it was still all fail.

seems to be the story of my life?

i started level 2 Spanish last night and realised how absolutely pathetic my efforts to learn a language have been. i managed to get through all 8 weeks of level 1 with minimum homework (tarea) efforts and no extra study outside of the 1.5 hours i was in a class each week.

last night i found myself, a) half asleep and wondering why i was subjecting myself to such torture when clearly i should be out shopping. late night shopping hello.
but b) amazed at how much the others in my class knew.

there was a moment when one of the girls was forming a response to the question: when are you free?
(babble babble) el fin de semana (the weekend) she says.

si, excelente the teacher replied.
then suddenly, turning to me, she asks 'and you wonks? cuando estas libre? (when are you free?)'

it was an embarrasing moment in which i think the sounds escaping my mouth were along the lines of:
'ahhhh. ahhhh. errr. hmmm. the weekend? whats the weekend in spanish? [awkward laugh]'

so i am now on a serious mission to seriously learn and phase 1 is clearly to make a chalkboard.
this will help by acting as my scribble board for new words and phrases that i learn!
and occasionally doubling as a doodle board when of course inspiration should take over.

bear vs shark

A: im leaning further and further towards shark.

B: what about a shark on land?

A: well the fight occurs in shallow water, disadvantaging both. but the circumference of the shark would be pretty deep for the bear already??

A: ive been thinking about this again, and i think the fight has to be via avatar link. cos you need to take into account too many things, like the shark might attack the bear and the bear wont know what to do and will try to catch it like a salmon cos its never seen a shark before. so if we got two people to control a grizzly bear and a greak white shark, with all physical limitations intact, that would be a much more interesting fight.

B: thats a good point. ive almost finished building an avatar chamber so if you could catch a shark and a bear we should have this resolved by say, saturday? im still putting my money on the bear though. catching a salmon shows a lot more ingenuity than torpedoing a seal. the only shark that might give it a run for its money is the bull shark - they're the angry little men of the ocean and they punch above their weight.

T: haha got me at angry little man. a full size great white coming at you is all pain and ripped flesh whereas a bear is cuddly. youre placing your money on an animal thats inspired yogi bear and pooh bear.

A: yeah but the bear can jump up, avoiding the sharks attack, then land on the sharks back holding it in a ninja grip.

i had another dream.

have forgotten most of it but the part i do remember was much like the scene from avatar when jake sully went to tackle/conquer the massive king of the sky bird thing called toruk. only i jumped on the back of a massive pidgeon and didnt have those boney shoulder parts to stand on so instead i was choking my bird's neck afraid that i was going to fall off and die.

woke up at the end of an amazingly strange dream.

woke up cos i needed to pee but then i went back to bed and ive forgotten most of it.

i remember euna and mina being in the dream and there was one bloke. cant remember.

basically we needed to get back to church but we had lost our way.

the church bus was in the form of a massive floating ship and we were navigating the way on a van.

we were standing on the flaps on the outside of the van and by stretching our arms out we would catch the wind and be able to steer the van in different directions.

we passed through areas that looked like typical dried out australian bushland.

almost crashed a number of times cos our arms werent strong enough to steer or navigate or catch wind or whatever it was we were meant to be doing.

eventually after much adventure i looked ahead and started screaming hey! thats the way to bankstown! at which point the other three started agreeing and flapping their arms for more wind.

and we safely navigated the big floating ship back to church.

ive decided to add blogging to the list.

while the reader count of this blog currently sits at a big fat zero (not helped by the fact that ive just changed my privacy settings) it all allows for a little bit of sillyness and something interesting to read and reflect on when im bored and about to die.

when backpacking was over i was actually rather glad to be getting back to civilisation, to routine and most importantly to an english speaking country. mind you my last stop was paris so that clearly explains the english thing.
i was glad to not have to be moving every third day and not have to live out of my 15kg backpack that was clearly doing funny things to my knees. my back was well and truly broken by this stage and the pain was starting to feel normal.
but now that i have nothing better to do with my time than think back on "the good ol' days" which were about 3 months ago i want it all back. i hear of others heading out to travel and i have itchy feet yet again. i miss being the ignorant english speaking tourist who forgot to do their homework and has no idea how to say thank you in whatever be the language. i miss being able to get away with taking photos of random buildings that the locals recognise as the rubbish dump. i miss having no idea what you've just ordered - and that sense of achievement you feel when your food actually turns out to be pretty decent. mind you with my indecisiveness i still dont know what im ordering. i miss having to wash my clothes in the sink. i miss the conversations of: ooh look at that. what is it. i dunno but its cool. yeah it is. cool - JETSTAR!!

some would say that im still travelling - which is probably quite true.
but the difference of doing it out of a backpack - dude.. i miss the backpain.

i read a book not too long ago titled "are you dave gorman?"

i was looking for some inspiration to go exploring so i decided to pick up a one of those travel story-book-things.
so amongst all the crap about romance in italy, discovering yourself in france, cows in india... i found this one about two english blokes - dave gorman and danny wallace - who, on one very stupid night, of too much tequila, make a bet which sparks their little expedition to find "heaps" of dave gormans (dave is convinced there are heaps of other blokes named dave gorman out there whereas danny thinks he's talking shit - the twat that he is). along the way they decide that "heaps" would be the number in a deck of cards + the jokers (it happened to be in danny's hand at the time of conversation. talk about inspiration!!)
for those who have no idea how many that actually is, its 54.
its takes them 6mths, all over the UK, to parts of europe and the states, lots and lots of money, one too many fights AND 5 people (2 of which are girls) who decide (by choice!!) that they would legally change their names to dave gorman.
up until the date of publication they met 104 dave gormans.
they were yet to meet a danny wallace.

a hilariously stupid book about two complete knob heads.
couldnt possibly have asked for a better source of inspiration.

when you have your manager's manager sitting next to you it sucks donkeys balls to have nothing to do. which means for the entire length of the day you are constantly required to pretend you are in fact working on the life changing, world impacting business that you have become a part of.

thats when the genius in you kicks and so you go back up through the spreadsheet and re-check. now thats dedication for ya!

so considering there are 66 to check and each takes at least 30seconds to load..
you do the math.

shit - i just did it for you and it only works out to be 33mins.

british romantic comedies

i have friends who would say that all romantic comedies are the greatest thing to have ever hit the big screen (even more so if they have freddy prince jnr in them) but i on the other hand would prefer to think that my taste in films is a little classier. unfortunatly, thats all lies and i too am a sucker for a good ol' romcom.
shamefully my dvd collection is proably about 98% trashbag chick flick but while that is the case i like to think that i stick with the better few.

a lot of which i have come to realise are british. and strangely enough all have hugh grant in them.

when we were kids, we always gave dad socks on his birthday and fathers day.
i think we gave him socks for christmas as well.
they were the white socks with the navy stripe across the top, that came in packs of three and were bought from woolies.
of course, it wasnt us spending the money but mum buying it for us, for dad.
i remember on one occasion we were going to buy 2 packs - one from the horndawg. and one from the wonks.
mum seemed a little reluctant. and then she convinced us that dad would be happy with just one from the both of us.

i used to think that dad really really liked socks.
even now when its time to buy dad a present, i think of socks.

Airport anger: man downs litre of vodka
A man nearly died from alcohol poisoning after quaffing a litre of vodka at a German airport security check instead of handing it over to comply with new carry on rules, police said on Wednesday.
The incident occurred at the Nuremberg airport on Tuesday, where the 64-year-old man was switching planes on his way home to Dresden from a holiday in Egypt.
New airport rules prohibit passengers from carrying larger quantities of liquid onto planes, and he was told at a security check he would have to either throw out the bottle of vodka or pay a fee to have his carry-on bag checked as cargo.
Instead, he chugged the bottle down - and was quickly unable to stand or otherwise function, police said.
A doctor called to the scene determined he had possibly life-threatening alcohol poisoning, and he was sent to a Nuremberg clinic for treatment.
The man, whose name was not released, is expected to be able to complete his journey home in a few days.

isnt it great being able to watch someone make a complete fool of themselves as they squirn their way through an uncomfortable conversation.
whether its the conversation or just the person they happen to be having the conversation with is besides the point.
they just squirm - and there are so many different ways they squirm.
its like having poured salt over a slug!
you could create a dialogue for the two as well and watch your own imaginary drama - LIVE!!
but then the conversation gets dubbed by the microphone in your head which switches on to scream "No! NO!! NOOO! Dont do that! Stop it! STOP! STOOOPPPP!!"
hahaha - love it!

one at every workplace

no matter where you go there seems to be the one old mate who is slightly odd.
he has a bizarre temperment and theres always something rather wrong with him.
nobody really gets along with him but whether its out of sympathy or for the fun of oozing more jolly goodness out the poor bugger the other fellas poke him from time to time but remain civil enough.

the first old rat i came across was Dave.
he was the funny bloke who still lived in the time of the typewriter.
"back in my day...." he started out one day...
i tuned out but i do remember something along the lines of how difficult it used to be just to type up a letter, how there was no such thing as "backspace" or "enter" and how the typewriters used to make a lovely little "ding!" as it moved to the next line. the "ding!" was of course only on the upgraded typewriters.
he quit the same day as me.

the second was Pete.
30 year old bloke with no hair and false teeth.
he had a bit of a temper and ended up having to get some sort of major surgery because he kept having heart attacks.
he kinda looked like grandad simpson.
the other blokes used to throw gummybear type jellies at him hoping to watch him try and 'chew' the little suckers. never got to see it though.

this time he's a Gerry.
my brother had to explain to me why this was actually quite funny. something about being a Gerry and old.
he's a farter.
he has a funny smell about him towards the end of the day.
he's also just been appointed as the tinsel man. i think he's enjoying his new found sense of purpose in life.
he gave me red tinsel - that called for a bit of a WOOT!

so the meeting new people thing is proving to be rather difficult. Having ditched the few friends i did know back home, it seems im quite incompetant at finding new ones.
but ive only just been told that the dark alleyways are the wrong place to be looking.
a suggestion was made to slap on some red lippy, put on some massive sunnies, wrap a floral scarf around my head (well i added the floral part. it always seems to be some chronic floral scarf. or if it was in the case of the person who suggested it - it could very well have been some pewtrid leopard or zebra print) and set up camp in a cafe with coffee in one hand, book in the other and see if people are naturally drawn to me.
apparently im going to dream about this.
ill let you know how it goes.

so ive decided to start blogging again.
its proving to be rather unsuccessful considering ive restarted this entry so many times im already thinking chronic - bugger it.

where to start.
you would think considering i am currently halfway across the world from home i should actually have quite a number of things that i could be ranting and rambling about but it seems the blogging juices are refusing to flow tonight.
as someone who claims to be wise once said - perhaps some toilet time would help.
but theres been a bit of a clog on that as well these days.
apparently apples are good for that.

clearly i need to come back to this after i get myself a bag of apples.

so its been quite a while since ive blogged but being at sore-eyes always makes me feel like i have to.
i owe it to my blog.
but i dont know what to write.
it used to come so naturally once upon a time but now it all seems like rambling crap which should be coming out the other end rather than from my finger tips.
then again that might be the only thing that hasnt changed.
so what do i write?
a little friend who lives a rather lonely life in an empty space between my ears tells me to ramble as it comes.
so here it is.
im sitting here at cofa with my coffee and well... what used to be my raisin toast before i completely devoured it.. surrounded by all these people (actually 1 other person but i did pass a lot of other people before i came to this sexy-mamma-cita computer) who will one day (possibly) go off to live a life of design and creativity and all that makes me think about is how much i would have changed my decisions in the past so that i dont wouldnt have to be sitting here right this very minute.

so here - i suppose - hopefully - is to that not happening again down the track.

but onto more important issues.
i actually need to go to the loo loo but the loo loo seems to be so far everywhere i go.
i would like to complain that my chicken legs cant carry me that far but that would be a lie and us biceptual creatures dont lie. we just box on.

I have a mate from my schooldays. His name is Bob. We rarely see each other but it is always a joy to catch up every few years. Bob is one of those joyous people who makes you feel good about life; he refers to everything material as "landfill". It always brings me back to earth. If I tell him about my new house/car/camera his response is always the same: "Bowsey, it's all landfill eventually."

This got me thinking during some recent discussions about cameras and which are "the best". I have a Speedgraphic camera from the '40s in my office. It sits on a beautiful wooden tripod. I always marvel at the thought of the photographer approaching a job with only five to 10 sheets of 4 X 5 inch cut-sheet film, no ability to look "through the lens" for framing and completely manual exposure on camera and flash. Not to mention having to wrangle both a focal plane and between the lens shutter at the same time. I marvel at how they actually got "the shot".
